The Sky Lampas Hammock with Denomination of Origin is elaborated in cotton, in the land of the hammock and is stained partially with aqua blue dye. Once the strands are dyed by lengths, the process of making the hammock begins: the threads are “thrown” on the loom and organized to assemble the desired patterns (warped), then the warp is made, which is the manual weaving of the fibers in the vertical loom; finally, the ends are finished to be able to hang the hammock with ropes and the crochet garnishes are made. Finally, two labels are placed: Latinlán certifying your support to the community and the Geographical Indication that certifies its thorough elaboration according to the specifications of a tradition more than 500 years old, certified through the Geographical indication “Tejeduría de San Jacinto”.
The whole process is 100% handmade; and depends on the expertise of the weaver to make the hammock look nice and functional. The elaboration and use of hammocks is a tradition of many Latin American indigenous peoples for centuries; which today is recognized and appreciated around the world. It is a real pleasure to rest, to contemplate, or to read, lulled by the soft swing of a hammock. To buy and to use Latinlán’s hammocks is to recognize and to value that tradition, is to support Fair Trade and to contribute a bit to the community of San Jacinto.
Lampazo or Ikat is a fabric made using a technique in which warp or weft threads, or both, are tie-dyed before weaving so that, when they are woven they form a design. The oldest hammocks of San Jacinto were done with this technique. In the past, the artisans used dyes obtained from the local trees, but in the 80s with environmental concerns about the deforestation that was occurring, began to use natural dyes and industrial dyes.
